A new mini box corer for sampling muddy bottoms in antarctic shallow waters BABT
Echeverría,Carlos Alejandro; Lavrado,Helena Passeri; Campos,Lúcia; Paiva,Paulo Cesar de.
A new Mini Box Corer (MBC-GEAMB) was developed for bottom sampling in Antarctic shallow waters down to 100 m depth from a small vessel. It consists of a detachable stainless steel box with a total sampling area of 0.0625 m², and a closing arm with a detachable blade without an external frame. MBC allowed stratified bottom sampling and good quality samples comparable to those obtained through diving. A comparison between the MBC-GEAMB and a 0.056 m²van Veen grab (VV) was undertaken for the benthic macrofaunal composition in Admiralty Bay, King George Island (Antarctica). MBC and VV samples were taken from three depths (20, 30 and 60m) in two sites. Total densities sampled with the MBC were up to 10 times higher than those obtained with van Veen grab. VV...

A seasonally varying biotope at Signy Island, Antarctic: implications for meiofaunal structure OMA
Vanhove, S.; Beghyn, M.; Van Gansbeke, D.; Bullough, L.W.; Vincx, M..
Under the typical high-latitude conditions of temperature, productivity and settlement of chlorophyll and phaeophytin to the sediment, many benthic organisms in the Antarctic show strong seasonal variation. Although meiofauna comprise an important component of the southpolar benthic ecosystem, our knowledge of them is limited. The metazoan meiofauna and the surrounding sediments were studied fortnightly for 18 mo in a shallow bay at Signy Island (Factory Cove, South Orkneys, Antarctica) to test whether and how the temporal variability of the environment influenced meiobenthos dynamics. By examination of the distribution of the abundance and biomass of the total community, the density of higher taxonomic groups, and of individual dominant nematode genera...

Accumulation of trace metals in some benthic invertebrate and fish species revelant to their concentration in water and sediment of lake qarun, Egypt OceanDocs
Fishar, M.R.A.; Ali, M.H.H..
Concentrations of major metals (Na, K, Ca, Mg) and some trace metals (Fe, Zn, Mn, Ni, Cu, Co, Pb, Cr, Cd) were determined in water, sediment, benthos and some common fish species from Lake Qarun. Water and sediment samples were collected from seven stations where, the benthos and fish species were collected from three sites representing east, middle and west of the lake. Distribution of studied metals showed that, east part generally had higher contamination than west one which may be attributed to the impact of pollution sources in this area which coming from El-Batts Drain and pumping station in the east part. Mollusca and Crustacea especially Barnacles have the highest concentrations of most heavy metals measured more than Polychaeta which make them...

Bremec, C.; Lasta, M.L.; Lucifora, L.O.; Valero, J..
The faunistic composition of invertebrate by-catch associated with the Patagonian scallop Zygochlamys patagonica fishery before its development were studied. Analyzed material was sampled from catches performed in different beds with the F/V Erin Bruce during 1995, all of them in undisturbed areas, in the Argentine continental shelf. Macrofaunal species were identified, weighted and percentages of presence estimated. By-catch invertebrate species were determined for every bed, mainly invertebrates without present commercial value. This baseline information is considered a useful tool to detect structural changes in the benthic communities in relation to the conservation of possible substrates of recruitment of this resource and to estimate the evolution of...

Piñero, R.A..

González, J.; Tapia, C.; Wilson, A.; Stotz, W.; Orensanz, J.M.; Parma, A.M.; Valero, J.; Catrilao, M.; Garrido, J..

Benthic communities and geomorphology of the Tesoro Island Coral Reef, Colombian Caribbean OceanDocs
Sánchez-M., Juan M..
The benthic communities distribution in Tesoro Island (Colombian Caribbean) coral reef was determinad by cartography of reef morphology and functional groups from aerial photographs, theodolite triangulation, and bottom transects over depths ranging from O to 30 m. Tesoro Island is a sand cay reef developed over an emerged reef platform whose basal cone possibly originated by mud diapirism on the continental shelf. The benthic communities are distributed as subzones of the geomorphologic units. The reef crest lies along the breaker zone, formed by Millepora spp. buttresses covered on their tops by Palythoa spp. and seawardly by a turf of Dictyota spp. The rear reef (varying from 0.5-1.5 m ¡n depth) is composed of pavement and grooves with live Porites...

Benthic metabolism over the emersion - Immersion alternation in sands colonized by the invasive Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum ArchiMer
Migne, Aline; Trigui, Rima Jihane; Davoult, Dominique; Desroy, Nicolas.
The effect of an invasive infaunal suspension-feeding bivalve, the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum, on benthic inorganic carbon and nutrient fluxes was examined through in situ incubations. Measurements were performed in spring and summer on a tidal sandflat of the Rance estuary (south part of the Western English Channel) colonized by the Manila clam after its deliberate introduction in the 1990's. Benthic inorganic carbon fluxes were measured using light and dark benthic chambers both at emersion and immersion. Benthic nutrient fluxes were measured using dark benthic chambers at immersion. Inorganic carbon (IC) and ammonium sediment release under darkness at immersion reached 5.60 mmol m−2 h−1 and 441 μmol m−2 h−1 respectively for a clam density of...

Biological availability of sediment-bound trace metals. ArchiMer
Luoma, S.
It has been established that direct uptake of (at least some) trace metals from sediments contributes to metal concentrations in benthic organisms. Important controls on metal uptake from sediment are the concentration of the exposure, the partitioning of the metals among components of the sediment, and the redox potential of the sediment. Important problems in ecology, physiology, geochemistry and biogeochemistry remain unresolved, however, and a concentrated interdisciplinary research effort will be necessary before a complete understanding of the fate and impact of sediment-bound metals will be possible.

Biometry of neotropical invertebrates inhabiting floodplain rivers: unraveling bionomy Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Zilli,Florencia; Barco,Julia del; Vanzetti,Agustín.
ABSTRACT Currently, it is widely recognized that invertebrates play key roles in neotropical floodplains and in many other environments worldwide. However, little information has been published concerning their biometry, in spite that it represents an essential tool for many different studies. Here, we provided length-mass and length-length relationships by fitting the linearized model (log10 Y = log10a + b log10 X) and several mean biomass ratios ± SE for bivalves, gastropods, quironomids, ephemeropterans, oligochaetes and hirudineans. We measured, weighed, oven dried and incinerated to ashes specimens collected from 2005 to 2014 in the Paraná River, Argentina. The lineal equations had fit levels higher than 75% in most of the significant regressions....

Blanchard, Michel; Heim, Marie; Rozec, Xavier; Caisey, Xavier.
This document presents a synthetic study of benthos in two large areas of the French coast: East-Channel and the area between Loire and Gironde. This original synthesis stocktakes biotopes maps published for the vast majority in the 70’s. The report uses the previous descriptions and analysis done by the different authors, and translates them with present specific names or biotopes codes, as proposed in the European EUNIS referring system. The presented maps are standardized and referred geographically with WGS84 to be collated together. For each biotope, specific richness and ecological richness are analysed, thanks to the information given by the various authors. Some informative cards of the main representative species are also presented in the...

CEAMARC, the Collaborative East Antarctic Marine Census for the Census of Antarctic Marine Life (IPY # 53): An overview ArchiMer
Hosie, Graham; Koubbi, Philippe; Riddle, Martin; Ozouf-costaz, Catherine; Moteki, Masato; Fukuchi, Mitsuo; Ameziane, Nadia; Ishimaru, Takashi; Goffart, Anne.
The Census for Antarctic Marine Life (CAML, IPY Project 53) aimed to investigate the distribution and abundance of Antarctic marine biodiversity and how it will be affected by climate change. It was a major ship-based research programme in the austral summer of 2007-2008 involving scientists from 30 countries and 19 vessels. The Collaborative East Antarctic Marine Census (CEAMARC) was a multinational contribution to CAML involving scientists and students from several nations using three ships from Australia, Japan and France surveying the one area. This collaboration was a highly coordinated and comprehensive survey of the plankton, fish, benthos, oceanography and geophysical conditions of the waters north of Terre Adelie and George V Land of Eastern...

Salenpicard, C; Bellan, G; Bellansantini, D; Arlhac, D; Marquet, R.
Changes over a period of thirty years in a circalittoral mud community (% silt greater than or equal to 75) in the Gulf of Fos (French, Mediterranean coast) have been followed at three sites spaced along a transect NNW-SSE at depths of 15, 35 and 70 m. The results clearly show how the macrobenthic community at the three sites has been influenced by the construction of the port of Fos, notably as a consequence of sediment suspension during the dredging of the docks and the access channel, but also due to the dumping at sea of dredged material (more than 100 x 10(6) m(3) were dredged, about a quarter of which was dumped at sea, at depths of 30 to 60 m). The grouping of the samples taken before, during and after the development of the port (1963-1964, from...

Changes in the intertidal community structure after a mass mortality event in sandy beaches of Argentina Naturalis
Dadon, J.R..
After a massive mortality of the dominant species (the clam Mesodesma mactroides) occurred in 1995, changes in the intertidal community in sandy beaches of Argentina were monitored. Eight sampling stations were established in a 40 km open stretch and samples were taken every October each year up to 2001. Biomass, density, size frequency distribution and mean growth rates for the most abundant species were analyzed. During the mortality event, only the benthic stages of M. mactroides were affected, their total mean biomass diminishing from 1,399 g to 2 g per running meter beach. Post-mortality recruitment was normal and the growth rates for the youngest cohorts were similar to those previously reported. After a two years’ lag, the wedge clam Donax...

INTRODUCTION: The Dover Strait (Figure 1) connects the North Sea to the English Channel. Here, northern France and South-East England are at their closest. This narrow corridor, one of the world's busiest straits for maritime shipping, is a key economic area for numerous activities, such as leisure and tourism, international ports and shipping, plus the exploitation of living or abiotic marine resources. This area is a significant resource for fisheries because many commercial fish species are abundant there, but also because of the presence of nursery and spawning areas and migratory routes linked to specific environmental characteristics. The vulnerability of these resources, which are subjected to strong anthropogenic pressures, has brought together...
